Splashbacks

Metro, porcelain, glass mosaic or large-format: honest advice on splashback tiles that wipe clean and stay looking sharp.

The splashback is the hardest-working surface in your kitchen. It catches grease from the hob, steam from the kettle and splashes from the sink, all in full view of anyone who walks in. Tiled properly, it should wipe clean in seconds and still look sharp in fifteen years.

A splashback that earns its keep

Choosing your tiles

Metro tiles. The classic, bevelled or flat, laid in brick bond, vertical stack or herringbone. They suit period and modern kitchens alike.
Porcelain. Denser and less porous than standard ceramic, so it shrugs off heat behind a hob and resists staining. Rectified edges allow neat, narrow grout joints.
Glass mosaic. Wonderful at bouncing light around smaller kitchens, though the extra grout lines mean a little more cleaning. We will always be straight with you about that.
Large-format. Fewer joints, faster cleaning and a calm, continuous look. It needs a flat wall and careful setting out, which is exactly the kind of work we enjoy.

The details that keep it easy to clean

Most splashbacks fail at the grout, not the tile. We use quality cement-based grouts as standard and often recommend epoxy grout directly behind hobs and sinks, where it resists grease and staining far better. The junction between worktop and tiles is sealed with silicone rather than grout, because the two surfaces move independently and rigid grout there will always crack.

Setting out

We dry-lay and set out from the centre line of your hob or window, so cuts land evenly at both ends and sockets sit neatly within tiles rather than clipping their corners. It is the sort of detail you notice without quite knowing why.

Questions tilers actually get

Can you tile a splashback over existing tiles?▾

Sometimes, if the old tiles are flat, sound and firmly bonded. Tiling over adds depth at worktops and sockets, though, so we often advise removing the originals. Your consultant will look at what you have and give you a straight answer at the design visit.

What grout is best behind a hob?▾

Epoxy grout. It resists grease, steam and staining far better than standard cement grout, so we often specify it in the splash zone behind hobs and sinks even when cement grout is used elsewhere on the wall.

How long does a splashback take to fit?▾

Most splashbacks are fixed one day and grouted the next, depending on the number of cuts, sockets and any preparation the wall needs. Your written quotation will confirm timings for your kitchen before any work begins.
