Two tiling jobs can use identical tiles and look worlds apart in five years’ time. The difference is rarely the materials; it’s the hundred small decisions a time-served tiler makes before and during fixing. These are the ones we hold ourselves to on every job.
The Details That Decide Whether Tiling Lasts
Setting out
Before a single tile is fixed, we plan the layout: centring the pattern on the room or its focal point, balancing cuts evenly at each end, and making sure no wall or floor finishes in an awkward sliver. On patterned and large-format work, setting out is most of the battle.
Level, sound substrates
Tiles are only as good as what sits beneath them. We check floors for flatness and movement, use self-levelling compound where needed, prime correctly for the background, and fit decoupling matting over floors where minor movement could otherwise telegraph through as cracks. Wet areas are tanked before tiling, always, and underfloor heating gets a flexible adhesive designed to cope with thermal movement.
Cut quality
Neat cuts are the quiet signature of a careful tiler. Holes around pipework and sockets are cut close and clean rather than smothered later, external corners are finished with mitres or well-matched trim, and rectified tiles are laid with the tight, even joints their machined edges make possible.
Grout joints
Spacer size is chosen to suit the tile: narrower joints for rectified formats, wider for handmade and non-rectified tiles, and always consistent across the room. We place movement joints at perimeters and at intervals across large floors, and finish internal corners and junctions with matched silicone rather than grout, so natural movement doesn’t crack them open.
Tidiness
Your home isn’t a building site. Floors and furniture are protected, cutting is done with proper dust management, we clean down at the end of each day and we take our waste away with us. It’s basic respect, and it’s part of the job.
