A kitchen floor takes more punishment than any other floor in the house: chair legs, dropped pans, muddy boots and daily mopping. The right tile, fitted on the right preparation, will handle all of it without complaint for decades.
Kitchen floors built for real life
Porcelain, ceramic or stone?
Safe underfoot
Slip resistance is measured with R-ratings. A matt R10 finish suits most kitchens; where a floor is regularly wet, by a garden door or in an adjoining utility room, an R11 tile is worth considering. Highly polished finishes look lovely, and we will say so plainly if they are the wrong choice for your household.
What sits under the tiles matters most
Good kitchen floors are made before the first tile goes down. We level uneven substrates with self-levelling compound, use flexible adhesive throughout, and fit decoupling matting over timber floors so natural movement in the boards cannot crack tiles or grout. Movement joints are placed at doorways and across long runs, and we routinely tile over electric and water underfloor heating once it has been commissioned correctly.

Questions tilers actually get
Can you tile a kitchen floor over floorboards?▾
Yes, with the right preparation. Timber floors move, so we fit a rigid overlay board or decoupling matting and use flexible adhesive, which stops that movement reaching the tiles and cracking grout. We assess the floor build-up at your design visit.
Will a tiled kitchen floor be slippery?▾
Not if the finish is chosen properly. A matt porcelain with an R10 slip rating suits most kitchens, and we suggest R11 near garden doors, utility areas or anywhere that stays wet. We factor in children, pets and how your kitchen is actually used.
Does tiling work with underfloor heating?▾
Very well. Tile conducts heat better than most floor coverings. We tile over electric mats and water systems using flexible adhesive suited to heated floors, and the heating is brought up to temperature gradually after grouting so nothing is stressed.
