Paths & steps

Hard-wearing porcelain paths and steps with real grip in the wet, built with proper falls to shed water and shrug off frost.

Paths and steps work harder than any patio. They are walked in all weathers, they carry wheelbarrows and bins, and they are the first place frost finds. We build them in 20mm exterior-grade porcelain, a vitrified tile that absorbs virtually no water, so freeze-thaw cycles have nothing to work on and the surface stays sound winter after winter.

Paths and steps in exterior porcelain

Grip matters most here. We specify tiles rated R11 or higher for slip resistance and set a slight cross-fall on every path, typically around 1 in 80, so rainwater sheds to one side instead of sitting on the surface. Unlike concrete slabs, porcelain does not soak up moisture, which means no green film of algae creeping across the shady stretches each autumn.

Steps built to be trusted

A good flight of steps is consistent: riser heights that match, treads that sit level with a slight fall to shed water, and a clean nosing your foot can find. We form treads from 20mm porcelain with bullnose or downstand edges, bed every piece on a primed mortar bed with exterior-grade flexible adhesive, and finish with a flexible exterior grout so nothing works loose underfoot.

Because exterior porcelain is rectified, edges are precisely square, so joints stay tight and straight lines stay straight. On a flight of steps, that matters more than anywhere else in the garden.

Honest advice before any work

Every path is priced on its own merits: the length of the run, the state of the existing base, the number of steps and cuts. Questions tilers actually get

Are porcelain steps safe in winter?▾

Yes, when specified and built correctly. We use tiles rated R11 or higher for slip resistance, form each tread with a slight fall so water runs off rather than freezing in place, and because porcelain is frost-proof the surface will not flake or spall the way concrete can after a hard winter.

How do you stop water pooling on a path?▾

With falls built in from the start. We lay paths with a cross-fall of around 1 in 80 towards a border, lawn or drainage channel, so rain sheds to one side rather than sitting in puddles. It is a small detail you never notice when it is done properly, and can never stop noticing when it is not.
